Until a few years ago, the idea of a savoury pie seemed absurd to me. Why would anyone want to take something as delicious as an apple pie and change it into a meat filled monster? Reluctantly, I decided to try a chicken pot pie and have since become a huge fan of savoury pies.
Aussie Pie Guy is a food truck specializing in savoury pies from down under. They have been a popular addition to Vancouver’s bustling food truck scene since 2013 and can usually be found in Downtown Vancouver or a variety of Farmers Markets and festivals.
Aussie Pie Guy’s menu is straight forward and includes pies with ingredients such as free range beef, pulled pork, beef short rib, goose and kangaroo. They do offer one or two vegetarian and sweet pies, but their specialty is their meat-filled savoury pies.
We decided to order two pies, one Aussie pie straight up (no gravy, mash or peas on top) and one Shane’s pie with the added toppings. Our total came to $18 which does make Aussie Pie Guy a pricier choice for a food truck.
Shane’s pie was absolutely delicious and full of strong and fresh flavours. This pie is stuffed with free range B.C. beef short rib and vegetables with a red wine au-jus. We ordered this pie with added toppings of mashed peas, mashed potato and gravy on top. This was a good decision as the extra toppings really enhanced the flavours of the pie and were worth the extra $2.
The beef short rib is the standout for this pie as it was fresh, delicious and perfectly cooked. It almost felt like a pulled pork pie, since the shredded pieces of beef were so juicy and tender.
The second pie we ordered was the traditional Aussie Pie and while this was also a delicious choice, the lack of added toppings did make this pie slightly less memorable. This pie is stuffed with chunks of free range BC beef and onion in a pepper gravy made with Howe Sound Rail Ale. The beef was once again great, but in my opinion the short rib beef inside Shane’s pie was a better fit as a filling. The onion and the pepper gravy were also full of flavour and helped create a moist and delicious filling for this pie.
All in all, I would recommend Aussie Pie Guy to anyone who is a fan of savoury pies and is willing to pay the $8 price. What makes Aussie Pie Guy a standout is their unique meat choices (such as goose or kangaroo) and the quality of the meat used to create their pies.
